Tuesday's Homework

I apologize for the bad quality of the diagrams in the homework. This is how the pictures look in the original. We went through all the words and associated them with the pictures, in class today.          '

Meet Mlle Bastian, Student Teacher from Glendon College

Last Week Math Homework

Last week, we didn't have a chance to discuss math homework with students. It was done today in class. Please ask your little one to share it with you. The purpose of the activity was to collect the information (about the favourite fruit), present it (with numbers, pictures, or words), compare/explain the findings ( e.g., more people like apples than cherries).

Here's the app that didn't download properly in the previous post.

During the interviews, many of you asked about websites or apps that would help your child practise reading at home. Here is an app that you might find useful.

Dear Parents,
I would like to thank you all for attending Teacher -Parent interviews last week. I appreciated our sincere discussions. It helped me better understand my students in order to define my techniques and strategies to promote their future progress.
Also, I would like to thank you for your support of our class learning programme. All your efforts in this area are noticed and much appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contact me in case you have any concern or would like to know about your child's progress.

Please remind your child to read the class library book every night at home and take it back to school next day.

Math in class

Students continue learning about numbers. Today we talked about estimation.
How many marbles do you think will fit into the glass? Students made their predictions and then, counted the marbles. What was the closest predictions? The activities alike promote child's comprehension of the concept of quantity. We'll be working on recognizing, counting, comparing, representing numbers, gradually introducing problem solving in this area. You are encouraged to discuss math ideas with your child at home, e.g., how many forks do we need to put on the table for dinner? Do we need less/more spoons? How many less/more? How do you know?

On Monday, we started a geometry unit in Movement and Location.  Students are learning to describe location of an object (e.g., the chair is on the right of the table) and give/follow directions ( go straight, turn right). These are the directions in French that the students need to learn. Please ask your child to practise them at home. You could also help by playing board games with him/her, e.g., Snakes and Ladders, Rush Hour, etc. For more ideas and games, please check Think Fun link.

To practise phonics at home,

please check this app.

Check Le français page.

At the page, you will find the information on what your child needs to do and say when doing Le calendrier presentation. As well, Les phrases importantes were added. These are the sentences that your child has been learning and is supposed to use in class. Please let him/her practise them at home.

The songs we sing in class

Les dictionnaires dans la classe

In class, students learn how to use references, e.g., a dictionary, when they read or write in French . Here is the dictionary that your child refers to on a daily basis in class. Some of you bought the dictionary for your child to work with it at home. If you didn't do it at that time and now wish you had it, please let me know via your child's agenda.

Helping Technology

If you have an iPad or iPhone, you could use some apps to help your child learn French, math, etc.
I can recommend these two for now. Learning to read and write, as well as numbers are our focus for the nearest future.

Sunday, 3 November 2013

Thank you for using the agenda as a communication tool between home and school, and signing every night to show that you have read it. Using the agenda as a tool to fulfill responsibilities and organize school work is an important learning skill to develop in your child. Your cooperation and support ensure this skill is learned.

L`objet mystere

L`objet mystere programme is designed to promote students` speaking and comprehension skills in French. Children enjoy this activity. I should admit that many of them improved their using French in class after the programme started. Pleas remind your child when it is her or his turn to present. The day is stated in their agendas. To prepare for the presentation at home, please consult the Montre et Raconte Page of this blog.
Daily Reading Programme: Mon journal de lecture
Daily reading to or with your child is an important extension of our daily classroom literacy activities. I have been always encouraging my students to read at home on a daily basis.

Starting from today, November 4th, your child will be bringing home one book every day to read and share with you. It will be your child’s job to read and record that story in their

“ Journal de lecture”. S/he will need to record the title of the book, a new word they learned from this book, the word (-s) that they can read, and if they like or dislike the book. Please have your child print all this information beside the appropriate date. You can then acknowledge their success with your signature. I also advise that your child read one-two pages aloud every night.

If your child is successful in completing the task weekly and brings his/her Journal de lecture back to class every Monday, he/she will receive and award at the end of the month.

Also, I strongly encourage YOU to read to him/her every night. If you can do this in French, it will be perfect! However, reading in English or in the language that you speak in your family is good as well. It is also important to discuss the stories read.

Enjoy this time together!
