Yes, it is spring! And we are in April already.
For our class, April is a Month of Guided Reading. We continue our Literacy Pathways and keep working on developing decoding and comprehension skills in reading.
Children enjoy working in a small group setting with me. They look for the clues to reveal the point of the author, to comprehend what the author wanted to say and what the story is about. They love to demonstrate their decoding skills. They learn how to check if they read right by asking themselves: ‘Does it sound good?’, ‘Does it make sense?’, ‘Is it written like I read?’.I encourage them to ask the same questions when they read at home. The Guided Reading sessions started after March Break and will continue into June, when the students will be tested for the level of reading that they achieved through this school year. Your child's reading level needs to be between 8 and 12 at that point .
Please ask your child about the programme and their experiences in this content. As well, I will make every effort to inform you of what will be going on during the sessions and the leveling progress, via your child’s agenda. In Math, students will be finishing the unit on measurement (mass, capacity, time, temperature, length, area). A test is coming. Stay tuned. Also, in April, they will explore the concept of fractions and practise their calculations skills (addition/subtraction).
In Social Studies, we are half way through My Community Unit. We are learning how to read simple maps. Next, we will be talking about places in our community, professions and people engaged in them.
Please remind your child to speak French at all times at school.
