SEPTEMBER 6, 2011 NEWSLETTER FROM ROOM 111

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Welcome to the first day of school! I am looking forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a safe, happy, positive learning experience in Grade One this year. The following is some information to ensure that we are all off to a great start:
School Hours
8:40 – 11:30 AM      12:25 – 3:15 PM
Please make sure that your child arrives on time so that he/she receives the benefit from the program. As a courtesy to all staff please pick your child up promptly at lunch and dismissal time. Teachers and staff have meetings and follow‑up work to attend to after dismissal. No one enters the building until the bell goes.
LUNCH PROGRAMME
If your child eats at school, please pack a healthy and adequate lunch. We discourage glass bottles and soft drinks. The lunch should be packed in a bag with your child’s name on it. Any leftovers will be taken home so you can monitor your child’s eating habits.
SNACK PROGRAMME
A nutritious snack is encouraged every day. (No peanuts/nuts, please.)
HOMEWORK
Beginning the second week of September, homework in French Reading will be sent home on Monday to be returned to school on Friday. Please provide your child with a knapsack big enough to hold a lunch, homework, notices, an agenda, library books, etc.
LIBRARY DAY
Our LIBRARY DAY is Day 3. It would be appreciated if you remind your child to return the book borrowed by this day so that he/she can take out another one.
WASHROOM ROUTINES
Please encourage your child to use the washroom before coming to school each day. At the beginning of the year we will be going to the washrooms before recesses to practise routines and help the children develop the habit of going at this time. The washrooms are located on the first floor and the children will be allowed to go at recess and during lunch when the halls are supervised. They will be discouraged from going during class time due to the interruption and for safety reasons. If the children must go, they will go with a buddy.
HEALTH CONCERNS
Please notify me about all allergies or health concerns. If your child is ill, please have him/her stay home and rest until he/she can participate in all school programming. Recess is not optional, so your child must feel well enough to go outdoors with the others.
OUTDOOR PLAY
The children go outside twice during the school day for a 15 minute recess. As well, if they are staying for lunch, they will be outside for 30 minutes. Please make sure your child wears clothing suitable for the weather every day.
TOYS AT SCHOOL
Children are not allowed to bring toys to school. If they do, they will be asked to leave them in their knapsacks or with me until the day is over. Next week I will be asking children to bring their favourite toy to school as part of a special speaking activity for that day only.
PROGRAMMING DURING THE FIRST FEW WEEKS
We will be spending the time working on school routines and building a sense of community in and outside the classroom. We will establish and prominently display our Tribes agreements that will help us remember that mutual respect, active listening, appreciation, and positive participation promote academic success in a safe environment.
We will also be reviewing what the children learned in Kindergarten as well as gradually moving toward meeting the First Term expectations of Grade 1.

Fire Drill and Lock Down procedures will be reviewed and practised this week as well.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Our Phys. Ed. day is Day 5. Please do not forget that rubber soled running shoes are required during Gym classes to prevent slipping on the floor. These running shoes will also be used in the classroom daily (indoor shoes).
You can help your child adapt to the routines of Grade 1 by making sure that he/she receives adequate rest and by talking with him/her about how to be a good listener and friend. I will be observing your child carefully to assess his/her skills so that I will be able to provide your child with the right program to suit his/her needs.
Statistics reveal that the greater the parental involvement in a child’s education, the more success that child is likely to experience.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to drop by after school or leave me a message with the time that you can be reached and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Just a little reminder: when you come to school to pick up your child during a school day or to talk to me or other teachers, please report to the Office first.

Thank you for your support and here’s to a great year!
